DOES MY CAR HAVE A CAMBELT, WETBELT OR TIMING CHAIN?
It depends on the make, model and engine fitted to your vehicle. Some engines use a traditional cambelt, some use a belt that runs in oil (often called a wetbelt), while others use a timing chain.

HOW DO I KNOW WHEN MY CAMBELT IS DUE FOR REPLACEMENT?
There isn't one replacement interval that applies to every vehicle. The recommended interval depends on the manufacturer, engine, age and mileage of the vehicle.
It's important to follow the correct schedule for your particular engine rather than relying on a general mileage figure.

WHAT IS A WETBELT?
A wetbelt is a type of timing belt designed to operate inside the engine where it is exposed to engine oil.
Like a conventional cambelt, it plays an important role in keeping the engine correctly timed. The correct maintenance and engine oil specification can be particularly important on engines fitted with this type of system.
WHY IS THE CORRECT ENGINE OIL IMPORTANT WITH A WETBELT?
Wetbelts operate in engine oil and are designed to work with the oil specification intended for that particular engine.
Using the correct oil and following the manufacturer's servicing requirements is therefore important for the long-term condition of the system.
WHAT HAPPENS IF A CAMBELT FAILS?
On many engines, cambelt failure can cause serious internal engine damage and potentially result in a very expensive repair.
Replacing the belt at the appropriate interval is preventative maintenance designed to reduce the risk of this happening.

Check the vehicle service history and any invoices for evidence of a previous replacement.
